Aneesa's blog is so much fun. She's an incredible girl, traveling and learning and co-running A Muslim in Hogwarts. Please, I beg you, check her out. Be amazed.

name and age and job/major/whatever, please!

Aneesa, 18 (19 on April 19), student on a gap year travelling to work on 5 languages. After that I plan to take a one-year college program in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies and then on to university to study languages, history, and politics for journalism!

in a demon-hunting world, what role would you play?

Probably something in-between the wizard-scholar-warrior. I’m not a specific –able-to-be-put-in-a-box kinda person and I tend to multitask a lot. I can’t see myself only fighting, because then I’d get frustrated with the violence and want to go off and write about it or make a potion so I can put my enemies to sleep instead of wasting energy flinging my sword about, and so on. Typically me, I’d probably exhaust myself trying to play all three roles simultaneously and also moan about how all the good-looking warriors are too intimidated by me.

weapon(s) of choice?

Definitely first off a bow and arrow because I am an archer in real life. Then a sword, but it’d have to be one of those sleek elfin designs because my arm strength is nil and can’t carry a heavy one. Then those small daggers that can be secreted about my person.

best song to fight evil to?

Currently it’s “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light ‘Em Up)” by Fall Out Boy.

what kind of demon would you be most excited to fight?

Either the sort where I can get something of use from it when I kill it (e.g. a granted wish, an ability, knowledge, etc.) or the sort that will pledge itself to me – or something like that – if I can overpower or outsmart it (you can never have enough loyalty around you).

what kind of outfit would you feel most powerful in?

Something in all-black or deep, royal gem colours. Tall boots, leather, and a structured jacket would definitely have to be involved, as well as something like a strong belt or secure bag where I can pull out my tricks without worrying about them falling out or being stolen. I’d also have to say that a cloth mask that covers everything except my eyes (anonymity is always useful and bewitching eyes are a girls best friend), a dramatic hood, and a wrought headpiece that goes around my forehead.

do you think you could ever help evil instead of fight it?

I know I definitely have the capacity for it. If this were a story, I’d probably be the character who thinks she’s really clever by going undercover with the “evil people” but end up getting so involved with them or in so much hot water that her plan backfires and needs help getting out but is too ashamed and proud to ask for help. Especially because everybody had advised her it was a bad idea in the first place. So she (well, I) would try to “do” the evil things she’s supposed to do without really harming anyone, and in the end both the “goodies” and the “baddies” would think she’s useless. A double backfire.

is there a real world girl fighting evil that you particularly admire?

I can’t really pick one. From history, I really admire Aishah Bint Abu Bakr. She was the Prophet Muhammad’s closest wife and honestly the smartest and sassiest lady with a temper and a tongue. She was quick to wittily insult anyone who disrespected those around her. She was most renowned female scholar after the death of the Prophet, and people would travel far and wide just to study from her, and was called a “theologian of the highest order” Then there was Nusaybah Bint Ka’ab who was also at the time of the Prophet Muhammad. In addition to raising three boys and a girl, she was a legendary fighter warrior and accomplished horsewoman up until a very elderly age. It is said that during battles, her skill with the sword astonished all those who saw her and that whether you looked right or left, all you would see is her weapons flashing to defend the Prophet. Respectively, both ladies were quick to point out to the Prophet whenever they felt that women were not given importance or mention in any sort of religious ruling and both were dedicated to the education of women at their time. As a child, I acted out battle scenes as Nusaybah and tried to mimic the retorts of Aishah and I wasn’t taught stories about cartoon princesses, but rather about real-life female warriors, scholars, and ladies of knowledge.

is there anything you do (or plan to do) in real life to fight evil?

I would like to say that my co-writing of the A Muslim in Hogwarts short stories is something that fights evil, but I think I’d only be justified if more work was being done with it (it’s currently lagging due to lack of time). In high school, I participated in a lot of organized debating, as well as the Model United Nations. Being the only visibly religious girl in most of my politics and history classes meant I was expected to know a lot about both South Asia and the Middle East, as well as Islam. It was a challenge I gladly rose to, because ignorant was not a state I wanted to leave my fellow classmates behind in. It really helped in my knowledge of both current and historical affairs.

I’m a spoken word poet, and I’ve performed and competed in a variety of areas. I speak a lot about politics, growing up as hijab-wearing Muslim, cultural identity, that sort of thing. Slam poetry is an amazing art and I often feel that is where the voice of multi-culturalism is really rooted.

As well, I do a lot of work with the Deaf community and learning American Sign Language. In addition, I’m also currently studying French and Spanish (and occasionally written Arabic and spoken Urdu). I want to ultimately go into journalism and use my abilities to work as an interpreter, photographer, and writer worldwide. People who study only the subject of journalism often come out knowing how to read and write news pieces, but nothing about the world itself. I want to do the opposite, because while writing is something that can be picked up quickly, worldly experience isn’t.

I like to “dress up”, as well, and when people feel free to talk about your outfit, they also feel more comfortable asking about my hijab, which can then turn into a form of religious education for them, which is always a bonus.

And while we’re at it, can someone point me to the university degree for taking over the world?

I want to say thank you so so so so much for having something as awesome, inspiring, and badass as Girls Fighting Evil. I’m here whenever you need help or references, whether it’s to Islam, South Aisan or Middle Eastern history, Islamic or Arab or South Aisan mythology, languages, and so on and so forth. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

mary's blog is filled with fandom and thought-provoking posts. she's passionate and kind. take a look!

name and age and job/major/whatever, please!

Mary, 24, and currently unemployed but when I can I plan to double major in film production and religious studies! (Minor in either animal studies/behavior, Chinese, or creative writing)

in a demon-hunting world, what role would you play?

I’d probably run a place where people could go to and rest and heal up between battles. Maybe in an abandoned church or something. It’d be open to animals as well, since they need a place to stay too!

weapon(s) of choice?

Throwing knives (once I learned to use them) cause being small and compact I can’t deal with heavy weapons. Also my words/writing, holy water (if it worked on fighting demons) and maybe a knife or two. And also my own body since I took jujutsu for a few years. (I’m not a black belt but I can get by)

best song to fight evil to?

Just about anything that combines more than one song together. Yknow, those electronic remixes with a steady beat.

what fictional girl fighting evil would you like to have at your side?

Tie between Abbie Mills and Avatar Yangchen.

what kind of outfit would you feel most powerful in?

Honestly? Either the Water Tribe or Sylph of Heart cosplays I wore to NYCC this past October.

do you think you could ever help evil instead of fight it?

Nope! I follow Jesus, and He practiced nonviolence. Loving your neighbor and all that. And I’ve been gravitating towards Venus/Aphrodite as I’m christopagan and She interests me in a philosophical way. As they say, make love not war.

is there a real world girl fighting evil that you particularly admire?

One favorite of mine is Mariam “Al-Astrolabiya” Al-Ijliya. She lived in tenth century Syria and she designed and constructed astrolabes! As for a modern day woman/girl fighting evil I’d say Nina Davuluri!

is there anything you do (or plan to do) in real life to fight evil?

Yeah, I already run the blog korraisnottan! It started as an anti-whitewashing Legend of Korra blog but over time (and as said series went to shit) it’s turned into a general anti-racism blog with over a thousand followers! In real life, with double majors I plan to write my own movies, perhaps make my own film studio and become a Unitarian Universalist minister since they accept queer people (I’m biromantic asexual) and women as ordained members.  As an autistic person who struggles with mental illness, I also try to promote neurodiversity and combat ableist and anti-autistic attitudes both online and in real life.

Madison’s blog is filled with fandom fun. Her blog is filled with happy things, from Night Vale to Sleepy Hollow to the Avengers. She’s also incredibly kind and so much fun to talk to. Take a peak, stay awhile!

name and age and job/major/whatever, please!

Madison, and I’m currently a high school honors student!

in a demon-hunting world, what role would you play?
I think I’d play the role of a sort of hybrid between the scholar and the scientist. I’d try to figure out how to aid the more combat ready girls by tracing the roots of the demons and finding the knowledge to hit them where it hurts.

weapon(s) of choice?
I think my ideal weapon would be a trusty staff. I don’t think I’d really trust myself with something bladed. A heavy tome has its uses too, though!

what fictional girl fighting evil would you like to have at your side?
I think the fictional girl fighting evil I’d want by my side is Roxy Lalonde. She’s overcome a lot in her character arc, and she’s also just really kind-hearted andI think I’d just really like to punch demons with her.

best song to fight evil to?
Best song to fight evil to is the version of Letterbomb from the American Idiot musical. It mixes the two genres that pump me up the most- pop punk and broadway soundtrack

what kind of outfit would you feel most powerful in?
I’d feel most powerful probably in jeans, a fandom shirt, a hoodie, and lots of jewelry even if it isn’t super combat practical. Wearing fandom shirts makes me feel confident because it sort of feels like carrying a part of the stories I identify with along with me, and the other clothes are mainly for comfort.

do you think you could ever help evil instead of fight it?

I don’t truly think I could? I mean I suppose anyone could given enough motivation but I don’t see myself doing so? I love people too much and I’ve focused so much of my energies into helping them that I can’t see myself purposely doing the opposite?

is there a real world girl fighting evil that you particularly admire?
I have two for sort of different reasons. Angela Zhang because I find her research and achievements in the field of cancer inspiring, and for a more historical girl fighting evil I think Julie D’Aubingy was kind of an icon simply in her boldness and sheer skill at life.

are anything you do (or plan to do) in real life to fight evil?
I plan to try and fight evil through biological research, most likely in ethanol or cellulosic biofuels. On a smaller level (but still very important to me) I plan to continue to help out in my community with a local canned food donation group I joined through some convention friends.

Lia is an awesome person. She’s always been incredibly kind to me, and her messages are always thoughtful and cool- and she’s only sixteen! Her blog is filled with fun and really interesting posts. Check out her blog for Harry Potter, feminism, and more!

name and age and job/major/whatever, please!
lia, 16, highschool student.

in a demon-hunting world, what role would you play?

I’d be the uncoordinated bookish girl who prefers to stay in the safety of shadows, supplying  fighters with weapons and the knowledge of how to use them. I’d know all about every foul creature and get super excited everytime I got to share my knowledge. Maybe too excited.

 weapon(s) of choice?

A scythe! Or book with a really hard cover.

best song to fight evil to?

Bastille - Bad Blood

what kind of demon would you be most excited to fight?

THE PATRIARCHY

what fictional girl fighting evil would you like to have at your side?

Arya Stark without question. She is the younger sister I have always wanted. Or…if things were more ambiguous, Abigail Hobbs.

what kind of outfit would you feel most powerful in?

Why the slytherin hogwarts uniform, of course.

do you think you could ever help evil instead of fight it?

I think that could happen in one of two ways: a Regulus Black way, and a Barty Crouch Senior way. By this I mean that I would either be the girl so enamoured by the idea of evil that eventually gets herself involved with it but leaves as soon as reality hits her, or I’d be the girl so blinded with righteous rage that I’d end up using evil means for the sake of a greater good. But I like to think that it wouldn’t happen.

is there a real world girl fighting evil that you particularly admire?

Yes, thegeekyblonde.tumblr.com! Her name’s Ann and among other things, she fights the patriarchy and makes the most wonderful condensed shakespeare videos. And I mean, her cat’s name is Romeo Lovebug Bandid. How could you not love her??

is there anything you do (or plan to do) in real life to fight evil?

Well I am part of this local movement (I live in Lisbon) called “Jovens Embaixadores para a Igualdade” (= Young Ambassadors for Equality) which organizes campaigns that bring awareness to issues such as gender equality and abusive relationships among teens. I’ve made good friends from it and enjoy the campaigns a whole lot because they bring me out of my comfort zone! Also, as I do aspire to be a writer, I will most definitely write strong, realistic female characters, of all races, gender identities, sexual orientations and able/disable bodies! Fighting evil one character at a time.
